暫停從墨西哥進口牛隻

數百幼蟲鑽入活肉中啃食
這類蠅類的雌蟲會在牲畜或其它溫血動物的傷口中產卵。卵孵化後，數百隻幼蟲會鑽入活肉中啃食，迅速擴大傷口，若未治療，將致宿主死亡。即使是耳標創口或小擦傷，也可能變成蛆蟲覆蓋的感染源，威脅整群牛隻。

威脅家畜寵物甚至人類
雖然目前螺旋蠅尚未入侵美國境內，但專家擔憂，一旦擴散，將威脅到家畜與寵物，甚至可能感染人類。明尼蘇達大學獸醫教授高史密斯 (Timothy Goldsmith) 表示，無家可歸者因缺乏衛生與醫療資源，將成為高風險族群。

每周釋放1億絕育蠅仍不夠
為防止疫情擴散，美國與巴拿馬合作的工廠目前每周釋放1億隻絕育蠅，但專家認為規模仍不足。得州農工大學昆蟲學家史威格 (Sonja Swiger) 表示，螺旋蠅雖飛行距離有限，但能依附於宿主體內跨越更遠距離，且已突破地理狹隘區域，需加倍釋放絕育蠅遏止蔓延。

疫情爆發得州損失數字驚人
美國農業部 (USDA) 宣布，將投資2100萬美元 (約1.64億港元)，把墨西哥一座果蠅工廠改建為螺旋蠅絕育基地，期望年底前恢復牛隻進口。USDA估計，若得州爆發螺旋蠅疫情，損失恐達18億美元 (約141億港元)。畜牧經濟學者安德森 (David Anderson) 直言，「這種寄生蟲絕對不能捲土重來，實在太可怕了。」
