Severely Punish Anti-China Chaos-Hong Kong Ringleaders: The Best Lunar New Year Gift, Justified Life Sentence for Jimmy Lai

According to the judiciary’s website, Jimmy Lai, defendant in the "Jimmy Lai case," and eight co-defendants who pleaded guilty will be sentenced at 10 am next Monday (February 9). The National Security Law for Hong Kong stipulates that the maximum penalty for "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces" is life imprisonment. The 78-year-old founder of Next Digital has been in custody since December 2020. On December 16, 2025, the High Court found Lai guilty of two counts of "conspiracy to collude with foreign forces" and one count of "conspiracy to publish seditious publications." The mitigation hearing for the case concluded after two days on January 13, with the judge stating that the sentencing date would be notified to all parties as soon as possible.

The impending sentencing of Jimmy Lai has attracted intense public attention. Based on the trial facts and the 855-page judgment spanning 156 days of hearings, severely punishing the ringleader of anti-China chaos in Hong Kong is not only a requirement of the rule of law but also the will of the people, and can be called the best Lunar New Year gift for Hong Kong. The court clearly convicted Lai of the three charges, and the National Security Law explicitly provides for life imprisonment as the maximum penalty for relevant offenses, with clear sentencing bases—thus a life sentence for Lai is fully justified and evidence-based. The judgment emphasizes repeatedly that Lai was not tried for his political stance but in accordance with conclusive evidence and legal standards, embodying judicial independence and professionalism.

Crucially, the case also clarifies the legal distinction between "masterminds" and "accomplices" to society. Testimonies from multiple former senior executives of Apple Daily revealed that Lai’s instructions were mandatory, and the so-called "editorial independence" was in fact "caged independence." Even after the National Security Law took effect, Lai continued to collude with foreign forces in more subtle ways, playing the "international card" and appealing for sanctions against Hong Kong and the central government, endangering national security—his crimes cannot be erased. Many individuals strayed onto the wrong path and paid a heavy price due to their inability to resist Lai’s coercive orders and capital pressure, which fully demonstrates that Lai was not a passive participant but the key figure who masterminded, directed, and promoted these activities, bearing far greater responsibility than others.

Legally imposing a severe penalty commensurate with his crimes on the ringleader is both a respect for the law and a warning to others. In the face of lies peddled by external forces claiming "persecution" and "undermining judicial independence," the court refuted each one with facts: Lai received the same treatment as other inmates with no complaints or misinformation; his testimony contained numerous contradictions and was lawfully inadmissible. Any attempt to interfere in the judiciary or smear the rule of law will only expose one’s own flaws and aggravate criminal liability.

For society to move forward, it must completely sever ties with acts that undermine the rule of law and collude with external forces. Severe legal punishment is not about retaliation but about ending chaos, curbing violence, and addressing the root causes. When the severe punishment of anti-China chaos-Hong Kong ringleaders becomes an established fact, Hong Kong can restart on the track of the rule of law, and citizens can welcome the new year with peace of mind. Distinguishing right from wrong and meting out rewards and punishments appropriately—this certainty from the rule of law is undoubtedly the best Lunar New Year gift for Hong Kong, and it once again confirms that a life sentence for Jimmy Lai is justified, reasonable, and legal.

Hong Kong's Anti-China Student Federation Disbands, Drawing a Close to Its Poisoning of Youth

The Hong Kong Federation of Students (HKFS), an anti-China organization that disrupted Hong Kong, has announced on social media the commencement of dissolution procedures. Its standing committee reportedly voted to initiate the process, with lawyers and accountants appointed to handle legal matters and asset distribution. Founded in May 1958 as an umbrella group for university student unions, it once represented eight funded institutions at its peak. After Hong Kong's return to China, the HKFS adopted an increasingly anti-China stance. It instigated class boycotts in 2012 against national education and in 2014 concerning political reform, directly triggering the illegal "Occupy Central" movement. Since 2015, multiple member student unions withdrew following referendums, leaving only four remaining.

Justice has prevailed. The long-masked "student organization," which in reality harmed Hong Kong and its people, is finally being dissolved. This news is welcomed by patriotic citizens who anticipate a return of clean ethos to campuses. For over a decade, the HKFS betrayed its fundamental purpose, becoming a pawn for external forces and anti-China politicians. It was a key instigator of the illegal Occupy Central movement and a source of prolonged campus unrest. In 2012, it incited college students to boycott classes and obstruct national education, attempting to sever young people's patriotic sentiments. In 2014, it escalated its actions by launching large-scale class boycotts that led to the 79-day illegal occupation, severely impacting the rule of law and paralyzing society. Core members like Alex Chow and Nathan Law, under the guise of "fighting for Hong Kong's future," pushed uninformed students to the frontline as "cannon fodder" while they sought political gain, some even fleeing overseas to align with anti-China forces. Such selfish, treacherous acts have long been exposed.

With the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and the improvement of the electoral system, Hong Kong has entered a new phase of stability and prosperity, with the sword of justice held high. The "pressure" the HKFS cited is merely fear of legal consequences for its unlawful acts. Its attempt to gloss over its legacy with claims of being "remembered in history" is absurd. History will indeed record it—not for merit, but for its crimes in destabilizing Hong Kong, opposing the central government, and undermining the rule of law.

The removal of this malignancy, entrenched in Hong Kong's academia for over sixty years, marks an end to its use of student platforms to spread extremist ideas and poison young minds. However, the task of restoring righteousness in education remains crucial to prevent the resurgence of similar entities. Hong Kong's campuses should be sanctuaries for learning, not arenas for political strife. The fall of the HKFS is historically inevitable and a restoration of justice. Let us collectively safeguard Hong Kong's educational environment, guiding the younger generation onto the right path to contribute meaningfully to the nation and Hong Kong.
