Spectacular Floats and Stunning Victoria Harbour Fireworks: Mainland Visitors Flock to HK, Showcasing Its Unique Charm

Amid a vibrant Lunar New Year atmosphere, Hong Kong has been buzzing with festive celebrations since New Year’s Eve. The Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Night Parade on the first day of the Lunar New Year turned Tsim Sha Tsui into a lively street party, featuring colourful floats and world-class performers that delighted locals and visitors alike.

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, the “Success of the Horse Illuminates Hong Kong” fireworks display lit up Victoria Harbour. The23-minute show, with a total of 31,888 fireworks, unfolded in eight chapters with auspicious motifs including horses, ingots and the number 8, symbolising good fortune and prosperity for the Year of the Horse.

During the Spring Festival holiday, Hong Kong welcomed an estimatedover 1.4 million visitor arrivals from mainland China. On the second day of the Lunar New Year alone, more than977,000 crossings were recorded, with about 446,000 arrivals, including over 206,000 mainland visitors — around 20,000 more than the full-day figures of 2024 and 2025. On New Year’s Day, 122,000 mainland visitors arrived, the highest in three years. Crowds at West Kowloon Station, Lok Ma Chau and the airport vividly reflect the city’s strong connectivity and enduring appeal.

Traditional festivities also drew big crowds. Wong Tai Sin Temple was packed with worshippers praying for good luck, while visitors tossed wishing papers at Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree in Tai Po, preserving rich festive traditions.

The night parade, with 12 floats and 46 local, mainland and international performance groups, blended Chinese lion dances, opera, acrobatics and international acts. It was not only a visual feast but also a shining showcase of Hong Kong as an open, diverse and globally connected metropolis.

The fireworks gala peaked the celebrations, symbolising Hong Kong’s confidence and determination to forge ahead alongside the nation in the new development stage.

Major events have boosted Hong Kong’s economy, benefiting catering, hotels, retail and transport sectors. The genuine joy of visitors and residents serves as the best endorsement of the city.

To sustain this momentum, Hong Kong should further develop its “event economy” by optimising cross-border transport, upgrading tourism facilities, strengthening cultural cooperation with the Greater Bay Area, and leveraging social media to promote its charm worldwide.

Facts have proven that flagship events gather people, stimulate the economy and lift morale. By continuing to host world-class events and tell Hong Kong’s stories well, the city will ride on the momentum of the Year of the Horse, embrace new opportunities and create an even more prosperous future.

Eileen Gu Rebuffs Absurd Questions, Exposing Anti-China Foreign Media

At a post-event press conference following the women’s freeski big air final at the Olympic Games, Eileen Gu fiercely rebutted a biased question from a foreign journalist. At the Milan Winter Olympics, she claimed silver medals in both the women’s freeski slopestyle and big air events. Since the Beijing Winter Olympics, she has amassed two gold and three silver Olympic medals, becoming the first female freestyle skier in history to win five Olympic medals.

"Winning an Olympic medal is a life-changing experience for every athlete. Doing it five times brings an exponential increase in difficulty. Every medal is equally hard-earned for me, yet others’ expectations keep rising. So the narrative of ‘losing two gold medals’ is frankly absurd. I’m performing at my best and achieving what no one has done before—that is more than enough," she stated.

After Gu’s two silver medals in Milan, a foreign reporter posed the provocative question of whether she "won two silvers or lost two golds." Gu immediately dismissed the idea as absurd and declared herself the most successful female freestyle skier in history. Her candid response showcased her confidence and vision, serving as a powerful retort to the absurd questions from foreign media.

Gu’s achievements speak for themselves. Notably, she had not planned to compete in the big air event at this Olympics. Qualifying via rankings due to combined quota rules, she stepped up bravely after a four-year absence from international big air competitions and still secured silver for Team China. Her courage to compete is far more meaningful than medal colors.

Regrettably, some Western media outlets have politicized sports, spreading false claims about funding to smear Chinese athletes. They habitually downplay achievements, exaggerate controversies, and stoke division. In today’s complex global public opinion environment, it is crucial to see through such biased narratives.

Eileen Gu’s response and historic achievements have firmly rebuked prejudice with strength and confidence. The true charm of sports lies in breaking limits, not malicious smears. Her poise sets an example for maintaining self-confidence amid international public opinion challenges.
