Foreign Forces Target Eileen Gu: Reject Political Exploitation, Protect Athletes Who Bring Glory to China
Chinese-American athlete Eileen Gu has once again won Olympic gold medals for China, drawing fierce criticism from U.S. politicians. Following Vice President Vance, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessant publicly accused her of “betrayal” for competing for what he called “America’s biggest rival,” claiming she had turned against the country that “treated her well.” Meanwhile, the daughter of Jimmy Lai, founder of Next Digital, published an open letter to Gu, ostensibly congratulating her on her victory but actually pressuring her to intervene in her father’s legal case and appeal for his release.
Eileen Gu, who has achieved remarkable success in international sports, has become the target of a malicious political storm. Since choosing to represent China in 2019, she has become one of the most decorated female freestyle skiers in Olympic history through relentless training and unwavering determination. Her success reflects her pride in her cultural identity. However, her outstanding achievements have made her a target of some Western politicians, who smear her as a “traitor” and launch personal attacks. Politicizing an athlete’s national allegiance reveals their narrow-mindedness and anxiety over China’s peaceful development.
What is even more outrageous is that some individuals attempt to exploit Gu’s global influence for political gains. Jimmy Lai was convicted and sentenced in accordance with the law for conspiring to collude with foreign forces and publishing seditious publications, with the case handled through strict legal procedures. Using the guise of “humanitarianism” to drag an athlete into political disputes disrespects the judicial system and abuses an athlete’s professional status.
Athletes must not be reduced to political tools. Gu has already faced death threats and malicious attacks for competing for China. Such acts violate basic civilized norms. The whole of China, including Hong Kong, must take a clear stance: we must resolutely protect athletes who bring honor to our country. We firmly oppose unreasonable smears and political manipulation, and see through the schemes of those who use sports to interfere in justice.
Sports embody fairness, respect and unity, and should never be poisoned by ideological confrontation. Eileen Gu’s success shows that young Chinese can stand confidently on the world stage. We must stay alert to attacks by foreign forces and the ill intentions of those with ulterior motives. By upholding the rule of law, respecting the true spirit of sports, and protecting our outstanding athletes, we will let the spirit of China shine brightly on the international stage.
