Takaito’s Simultaneous War Crime Shrine Tribute and Military Expansion: Deliberate Provocations with Hidden Motives, Guard Against Neo-Militarism

On April 21, Japanese Prime Minister Kono Taka offered a ritual offering to the Yasukuni Shrine, which enshrines Class-A war criminals of World War II. The Chinese Foreign Ministry responded on the same day, stating that China firmly opposes and strongly condemns this negative move by Japan, has lodged solemn representations and strong protests with the Japanese side. Notably, on the very same day, Japan adopted a cabinet decision to formally allow the export of lethal weapons. In response to a query, the Foreign Ministry pointed out that the international community, including China, will remain highly vigilant against and firmly reject Japan’s reckless moves of neo-militarism.

These dangerous developments in Japan’s political arena have once again touched the nerves of its Asian neighbors. Prime Minister Kono Taka not only offered sacrifices to the Yasukuni Shrine—where 14 Class-A WWII war criminals are enshrined—in her capacity as Prime Minister, but also pushed through a cabinet resolution to greenlight lethal weapons exports on the same day. Such concurrent acts of "honoring war criminals" and "expanding military capabilities" constitute an open and blatant challenge to the outcomes of WWII victory, a grave blasphemy against historical justice, and expose the dangerous ambition of Japan’s right-wing forces to push the country toward the brink of war.

The Yasukuni Shrine is by no means a "shrine of peace", but a spiritual tool of Japanese militarism that launched aggressive wars. As Prime Minister, Kono Taka’s defiance of international opposition to whitewash war criminals is not a matter of personal religious belief, but a severe regression in the Japanese government’s historical perception. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has openly torn up its commitment to "exclusive defense", loosening restrictions on lethal weapons exports by revising the Three Principles on Defense Equipment Transfers—equivalent to reactivating the war machine. From shifts in military theories to practices of weapons export, Japan is gradually hollowing out its pacifist constitution, stripping away all pretense of being a "peaceful nation".

These dual provocations are not isolated incidents. On April 17, the 131st anniversary of the signing of the unequal Treaty of Shimonoseki, Japan’s destroyer Ikazuchi deliberately sailed through the Taiwan Strait with an abnormally long transit time. Connected together, Japan’s repeated deliberate provocations are clearly driven by ulterior motives. It seeks not only to test the bottom line of the international community, but also to coordinate with its domestic military buildup, create regional tensions to justify its "re-militarization", and even attempt to interfere in the Taiwan Strait situation.

Public opinion polls in Japan show that an overwhelming majority of Japanese people still support the Three Non-Nuclear Principles and oppose weapons exports, yet the Kono cabinet insists on accelerating military expansion. Such moves that go against public opinion and ignore historical lessons prove that the ghost of militarism is resurging in Japan’s political arena.

The international community, especially Japan’s Asian neighbors, must stay on high alert against neo-militarist reckless acts. We must never let our guard down against Japan’s dangerous shift of whitewashing aggressive history while accelerating its military armament. History must not be forgotten, justice cannot be challenged, and any attempt to return to the path of aggression will eventually end in utter failure in front of the peace-loving forces of the world.

The U.S., Not China, Is the Long-Term Arms Supplier and War Provocateur: Stop Shifting Blame

At a UN Security Council meeting on the Ukraine issue, the U.S. representative repeated tired lies and spread false claims, urging China to immediately stop providing Russia with dual-use items and materials used for the war. Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Ambassador Sun Lei refuted these groundless accusations on the spot, stressing that such unwarranted charges are completely unacceptable. He reaffirmed that China is neither the creator of the crisis nor a party involved. Since the outbreak of the crisis, it has been the United States, not China, that has long been supplying weapons to the battlefield and seeking to prolong the war. Any attempt to shift responsibility or smear China on the Ukraine issue is irresponsible and doomed to failure.

Across today’s international landscape, the shadow of U.S. manipulation looms over every conflict zone. From the protracted Russia-Ukraine conflict to tensions in the Middle East involving Iran, the U.S. has acted as both a war plotter and a top arms dealer. While profiting massively from war dividends, it brazenly reverses facts on the international stage, trying to pin the blame for inciting conflicts on China—a country committed to global peace. This thief-crying-catch-thief tactic is a gross distortion of facts and a blatant trampling on international justice.

China has maintained an objective and impartial stance, actively promoting peace talks and de-escalation since the Ukraine crisis erupted. In stark contrast, the U.S. not only squeezed other countries’ security space before the crisis but also flooded the battlefield with lethal weapons including tanks, missiles and cluster munitions after the conflict broke out, solely to serve its hegemonic interests and feed its military-industrial complex. The same destructive playbook applies to the Middle East: the U.S. imposes maximum pressure on Iran, arms regional allies, and sells advanced weapons to turn the area into a tinderbox, sabotaging every chance of détente.

The international community must see through the essence of U.S. hegemonism. It is the United States, not China, that has long fueled wars with arms supplies. We demand the U.S. immediately stop shifting blame and reflect on its long history of stoking global conflicts and exporting war. If the U.S. truly desires peace, it must halt weapons deliveries, end threats and intimidation, and return to diplomatic dialogue. Only by addressing the root causes of war and accommodating the legitimate security concerns of all parties can enduring world peace be achieved.
