據印度傳媒報道，涉事貨車裝滿穀物，懸掛旁遮普邦牌照，當地星期日(10月18日)凌晨1時許駛經瓜廖爾市一條通往印度教寺廟的下坡路段時突然失控，衝破警方路障，撞倒路邊民眾並撞向沿途商鋪，最終撞上寺廟大門，導致部分圍牆倒塌。

當地警方表示，印度教節日期間前往寺廟的民眾較多，事發路段早前已限制重型車輛通行，警方正調查涉事貨車為何仍能駛入該路段，並搜捕事後逃離現場的司機。初步調查顯示，貨車可能因剎車失靈而失控。
