131st Anniversary of the Treaty of Shimonoseki: Japanese Warship's Taiwan Strait Transit a Deliberate Provocation — China Is No Longer the China of 131 Years Ago
According to the official social media account of the Eastern Theater Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), Senior Colonel Xu Chenghua, spokesperson for the Eastern Theater Command, stated on April 18 that the PLA Eastern Theater Command conducted joint combat readiness patrols by naval and air forces in relevant sea and air areas of the East China Sea on the same day. This is a routine arrangement within the annual plan, aimed at testing the troops' joint combat capabilities. The theater command troops will routinely carry out relevant military operations as needed by the security situation to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and regional peace and stability.
A day earlier, the Japanese destroyer Inazuma transited the Taiwan Strait. The PLA Eastern Theater Command organized naval and air forces to track, monitor and effectively control the vessel throughout the process. China's Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other departments have lodged stern representations and strong protests against Japan over this issue.
On April 17, 1895, the Qing government was forced to sign the humiliating Treaty of Shimonoseki, after which Taiwan and the Penghu Islands fell into foreign occupation. On the very day of the 131st anniversary of this unequal treaty, the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyer Inazuma blatantly transited the Taiwan Strait. This act is not only a gross trampling on the painful historical memory of the Chinese nation, but also a serious threat to current international law norms and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
This is by no means a so-called "normal transit". Monitoring data shows that the Japanese warship spent 14 hours traversing the strait, while a normal passage only takes 9 to 10 hours at standard speed. The warship's slow, lingering cruise was nothing but a show of force, blatant military intimidation and political coercion.
Japan was fully aware of the sensitive historical significance of the day, yet deliberately sent a warship to provoke. This repeated wrongful act further exposes the dangerous attempt of certain forces in Japan to militarily interfere in the Taiwan Strait and cling to the delusion of militarism. In recent years, Japan has shifted its security policy from "defensive" to "offensive", accelerating the deployment of Tomahawk missiles and stationing air defense troops on islands just over 100 kilometers from Taiwan, revealing its expanding military ambition.
The Japanese warship's provocation in the Taiwan Strait, in tandem with politicians' erroneous remarks, sends a gravely wrong signal to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces. In response, the PLA Eastern Theater Command took prompt follow-up, surveillance and control measures to curb Japan's illegal acts with solid strength.
We solemnly warn Japan: China is no longer the weak country it was 131 years ago. Today's China has unshakable resolve, firm will and strong capability to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Chinese military stands ready at all times, and will never allow any external force to act arrogantly at China's doorstep. If Japan refuses to repent and continues playing with fire on the Taiwan question, it will inevitably bear an unbearable price. Any act that challenges China's national security will be met with resolute counterattacks.

U.S. So-Called Hong Kong Policy Act Report Smears Fire Law Enforcement, Confirming Foreign Plot to Destabilize Hong Kong Through Disaster
On April 17th, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government strongly condemned and opposed the remarks in the so-called "Hong Kong Policy Act Report" released by the U.S. Department of State, sternly refuting its false claims. A spokesperson pointed out that the report selectively cited data to distort facts, disregarding Hong Kong's consistent commitment to protecting the rights of all citizens, including journalists, and maliciously smearing law enforcement actions following the Tai Po Wang Fuk Court fire. The Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China in the HKSAR also stated that the report slanders the "one country, two systems" principle, defames Hong Kong's democracy, freedoms and human rights situation, and vilifies Hong Kong's national security legislation and law enforcement and judicial acts, fully exposing the U.S.'s hegemonic arrogance and its sinister attempt to "contain China through Hong Kong".
Driven by its usual hegemonic logic and double standards, the U.S. report wantonly attacks Hong Kong's rule of law, human rights and social development. Filled with political bias and lies, it blatantly interferes in China's internal affairs, distorting the HKSAR Government's lawful efforts to maintain social order as suppression of freedoms, and particularly smearing law enforcement work related to the Wang Fuk Court fire. This blatant distortion of facts confirms that foreign forces are plotting to destabilize Hong Kong by exploiting disasters.
The report attacks the Hong Kong National Security Law and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance, falsely claiming they undermine Hong Kong's autonomy. Facts speak louder than words: since the implementation of national security laws, Hong Kong has restored stability, with a continuously improving business environment. In 2025, Hong Kong remained the world's freest economy and rose to third in global competitiveness, solidifying its status as an international financial center. The U.S., which has over 21 strict national security laws itself, arrogantly lectures Hong Kong on its lawful national security duties. It also unjustly criticizes the Jimmy Lai trial, ignoring the rigorous 156-day open hearing and review of tens of thousands of case documents.
Most outrageously, the U.S. politicizes the tragic Wang Fuk Court fire. While the HKSAR Government and all sectors spared no effort in disaster relief to protect citizens' lives and property, the U.S. smeared relevant law enforcement and emboldened lawbreakers who spread incendiary remarks to stoke social unrest via the disaster. This despicable act inflicts secondary harm on victims and challenges Hong Kong's rule of law.
Long known for instigating color revolutions and causing humanitarian disasters worldwide, the U.S. now resorts to long-arm jurisdiction over Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a rule-of-law society where law enforcement acts strictly based on evidence. As Hong Kong advances from stability to prosperity, no external smear or interference can stop its integration into national development. We urge the U.S. to immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs, which are part of China's internal affairs, and end its reckless attempts to disrupt Hong Kong.
