China's diplomacy will continue to act in accordance with the requirement of the holistic approach to national security, so as to contribute to global common security while protecting its own security, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lin Jian said on Monday.

He made the remarks at a regular briefing in Beijing as China observed its National Security Education Day on Monday.

"This year marks the 10th anniversary of a holistic approach to national security put forward by General Secretary Xi Jinping. A holistic approach to national security, rooted in the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics, is a crystallization of the practical experience and collective wisdom of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Chinese people in safeguarding national sovereignty, security, and development interests over the past century. Under the sound guidance of this approach, the work related to national security in the new era has made historic achievements, our sovereignty, security and development interests are safeguarded in an all-round way, and the society overall has been stable over the years. China has become one of the safest countries in the world," Lin said.

He stressed that the holistic approach to national security emphasizes the coordination between one's own security and the common security of all, and advocates the common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable security vision.

"In a world of change and disorder on the security front, President Xi Jinping put forward the important Global Security Initiative (GSI), which aims to create a new path to security that features dialogue over confrontation, partnership over alliance and win-win cooperation over zero-sum game. It provides China's solutions to global security challenges," Lin said.

"The Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs, which was held at the end of last year, pointed out that a community with shared future for mankind is the noble goal pursued by China in conducting major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics for the new era. We should implement the Global Development Initiative (GDI), the Global Security Initiative (GSI) and the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) as the strategic guidance, to bring the world to a bright future of peace, security, prosperity and progress," said the spokesman.

"Embarking on a new journey, China's diplomacy will continue to act in accordance with the requirement of the holistic approach to national security. We will contribute to global common security while protecting our own security. We will make steady progress in putting into practice the Global Security Initiative, promote joint efforts of all countries to respond to security risks and challenges, and make relentless efforts to build a beautiful world with lasting peace and universal security," Lin said.

The Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra on Sunday brought unexpected joy to travelers at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport with a spontaneous musical performance.

The impromptu concert was staged by musicians who were on a trip to Xi'an City, northwest China's Shaanxi Province for a performance scheduled for the Labor Day holiday, which runs from May 1 till May 5.

In the bustling airport terminal, they performed Western classics such as "Peer Gynt Suites," "The Nutcracker" excerpt "Waltz of the Flowers," and also Chinese symphonic works "My People, My Country" and "My Beautiful Hometown."

The enchanting melodies enthralled travelers from home and abroad, as they took a moment to capture the scenes on their mobile phones.

"Hearing someone nearby singing along made me feel so happy and touched," one spectator remarked.

"It's a very nice atmosphere. Nice, interesting city, yes," said a traveler from Bulgaria.

"Before returning to Russia from China, hearing music by our composer Tchaikovsky was a pleasant surprise," said a Russian traveler.

Having ventured beyond the concert hall, the orchestra has brought classical music to public spaces across Shanghai.

"We want people to experience beautiful music not only in concert halls and cultural spaces but also in many public spaces of Shanghai, including ports, docks, and commercial districts," said Zhang Liang, vice president and resident conductor of the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra.
