China remains under orange alert as heatwave pushes temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius

2024-08-08 17:33 Last Updated At:19:57

China's national observatory on Thursday continued to issue an orange alert for high temperatures as an intense heatwave lingers in many regions of the country, with some areas experiencing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius.

In east China's Anhui Province, daily temperatures south of the Huaihe River have exceeded 35 degrees Celsius, with some counties being scorched by over 40 degrees Celsius in recent days.

To alleviate the heat, local authorities have distributed summer heat relief supplies and set up sunshades covering more than 6,500 square meters for workers at a construction site. Additionally, some construction sites have adopted robots to increase the speed of construction and improve safety. In some districts, local authorities have provided each sanitation worker with a nest equipped with a special ice bag to release cool air and lower the body temperature.

According to the meteorological department, this scorching weather will continue for four more days before temperatures gradually decrease. Relevant departments will continue their efforts to respond to this sustained extreme weather.

Shanghai, China's financial hub, and several other eastern Chinese cities have been flooded due to Typhoon Pulasan, and drainage efforts are in full swing.

Pulasan, the 14th typhoon of the year, made its second landfall in Shanghai's Fengxian District at around 21:45 on Thursday after first making landfall earlier that day in Zhejiang Province.

Since midnight on Friday, parts of Shanghai's Pudong New Area have experienced increasingly heavy rainfall, resulting in flooded streets and temporary school closures.

Local authorities have intensified drainage efforts on waterlogged roads and in swamped neighborhoods.

Similarly, in neighboring Jiangsu Province, Rugao, a county-level city, was hit by a downpour from 7:00 to 17:00 on Friday. By 18:00, local firefighters had responded to more than 60 cases, carrying out drainage and rescue operations.
